Street Riding Tips
by Charles Thayer

A few months ago I was speaking with “Mike” of the MMA. He rides a beautiful V-Twin. We were discussing rider safety. He was speaking about the little riding tips which most experienced riders use when riding on the street. So thanks to “Mike” this will be a short message on street riding tips.

1. When approaching a signal light intersection keep searching your environment. Watch for other traffic problems around you. You can also watch the pedestrian walk/wait sign. If it is green your chance of passing through the intersection is good. If it is flashing red, be prepared to stop.

2. Wind can be a problem in Arizona. If you check the shrubbery or trees along the road you will be less surprised by a sudden gust of wind.

3. When making turns keep your head and eyes up looking through the turn as far as you can. If you are in the habit of looking down at the pavement when turning this will cause you to make wider turns than you need. This error is responsible for over 40% of motorcycle fatal accidents.

4. Whenever you are riding keep a minimum 2 seconds following distance from the vehicle ahead of you. This is still close, 3-4 seconds are ideal. I observed a 2-up the other day and the motorcyclist was so close to the left rear fender of the car ahead of him, that when the car turned into the left turn lane the motorcycle was forced to go with the car, back off the throttle and then swerve back into the southbound lane. Protect yourself with safe following distances.

5. Thinking of learning to ride? Enhance your riding skills? Give us a call and find out what we have to offer. We provide fun courses while learning rider safety at all times.

Remember:
Head Up, Eyes on the Horizon & look through the turns.
