Look 12 Seconds Ahead

How far ahead of yourself do you look when riding? Do you know that the safest thing you can do on a bike is to keep your head up and your eyes searching ahead of you. The three general rules are; a 2 second following distance when everything is great, a four second following distance to enable you to react quickly to serious situation, and a 12 second observation distance is the best of all. With the 12 second rule you watch well ahead of yourself. This helps you deal with up coming hazards you want to avoid. You have time to see it, analyze it, decide how to handle it and then execute that movement to keep you safe and upright.
I have a challenge for you on your next ride. In various driving situations WHAT ARE YOUR EYES LOOKING AT?

Try this in the following situations;
1. Driving on a freeway or city street
2. When making a turn (Left and Right turns)
3. When coming to a stop
4. Making a lane change
5. Entering the freeway lanes

The answers are easy if you do this correctly. This single tip will enhance your riding enjoyment greatly. You will feel like you are in better control of your motorcycle.
The tip is to keep your head and eyes up and forward 12 seconds. At 65 mph this is looking one quarter of a mile ahead of your current location. If this is not possible how far ahead can you look? The further the better “Try it You’ll like it”. Practice it all the time you are riding.
