MOTORCYCLE TECH TIP

WHERE DID ALL THE CARBURETORS GO?
We have heard rumblings about this for some time however, starting with model year 2007, it has finally happened. With the introduction of the 2007 Harleys, the motor company announced that they no longer offer any carbureted models.

Why did this happen and what does it mean to us?
First, rest assured, this did not happen overnight. Due to ever tightening emissions standards, fuel injection becomes necessary.  Fuel injection is the only way to precisely meter fuel delivery, thus meeting EPA standards and maintaining acceptable drivability. As you know, all automobiles have had fuel injection for quite some time and it has just taken the Feds longer to get around to our motorcycles.

Don’t worry this is not bad news.
I have heard people say, “I want a carburetor because if I break down, I will be able to fix it on the road.”  This is only true if you have a float stick, as well as the tools and mechanical ability to remove the float bowl on the side of the road.  The truth of the matter is that fuel injection is far more reliable than carburetors ever were.  There is also something to be said about getting on your bike, hitting the start button and taking off without the motor spitting or sputtering until it warms up.

What about modifying and tuning fuel injected engines?
No problem! The Harley Delphi system is easily re-programmed with a Screamin’ Eagle Race Tuner.  There are also other products available, but this is the most effective method when performed by a skilled, factory-trained mechanic.

The subject of carburetors vs. fuel injection could fill volumes and I would be happy to answer any questions in depth in future issues.
