Now
you have decided on your custom paint shop, you are comfortable leaving
your ride in the hands of someone else. Next is the trickiest part of
all. What color, what art or graphics? After all the bodywork, primer
and blocking is done you'll be ready for paint. So, here are body basics.
To start we use a 180 grit sand paper to rough up the raw sheet metal.
An etch primer is applied and then it is time to sling mudd, body filler,
bondo etc…We then sand the mudd using a grit paper appropriate
for the amount of shaping to be done. Now we are ready for a primer
filler which we spray 3 to 4 coats. We are going to use this to fill
our sanding scratches. At this point we double check all our bodywork,
glaze (a thinner mudd) & if needed re-prime. Next step, is to guide
coat by appling a black mist of paint or powder over the surface to
be sanded. Most paint stores sell a product for this specific application.
We’ll use 320 with a block and our hand and sand all the black
guide coat away. You may end up with small pinholes which we'll catch
in the next coat of primer. So we repeat the primer filler process finishing
off with water and 600 grit. Double check and you should be ready for
basecoat.
Next time we'll explain different base coats. If you have any questions
please email us.
Thanks and I look forward to painting your ride
