Many of us are getting older or have other difficulties that prevent us from
riding a two wheeled motorcycle. But we still want to ride and be safe doing
so. Well a trike may be your answer. I suggest this over a side car as the stability
of the trike surpasses that of a side car.
Most people who start out on a trike either have their current bike converted
to a trike or buy one that has been converted by the previous owner. Let me tell
you trikes are fun.
When we train trike riders there are several things that have to change to make
a fun ride. How you steer and brake are the two most common concerns. We spend
up to 5 hours working on many aspects of trike riding but these two areas go
from that start of the class to the very last exercise.
Steering is not a push on the handle bar. This stretches you out and causes a
muscle pull in your back. This brings on fatigue quickly and your riding becomes
less & less because of this. It’s just plain tiring.
You must understand the dynamics of a trike. Most of the weight is to the rear
of the trike. If you can learn to lean back and pull on the handle bars the turning
will be easier and more fun.
Braking is the next concern. If you have ridden a 2 wheel bike for many years
you will want to over use the front brake on the trike. On a trike the main brakes
are in the rear. In fact there are two of them. You want to learn to use them
properly in conjunction with the front brakes.
